چکیده

This work presents and discusses a methodology for modeling the behavior of a landfill system in terms of biogas release to the atmosphere, relating this quantity to local meteorological parameters. One of the most important goals in the study of MSW sites lies in the optimization of biogas collection, thus minimizing its release to the atmosphere. After an introductory part, that presents the context of noninvasive measurements for the assessment of biogas release, the concepts of survey mapping and automatic flux monitoring are introduced. Objective of this work is to make use of time series coming from long-term flux monitoring campaigns in order to assess the trend of gas release from the MSW site. A key aspect in processing such data is the modeling of the effect of meteorological parameters over such measurements; this is accomplished by modeling the system behavior with a set of Input/Output data to characterize it without prior knowledge (system identification). The system identification approach presented here is based on an adaptive simulation concept, where a set of Input/Output data help training a “black box” model, without necessarily a prior analytical knowledge. The adaptive concept is based on an Artificial Neural Network scheme, which is trained by real-world data coming from a long-term monitoring campaign; such data are also used to test the real forecasting capability of the model. In this particular framework, the technique presented in this paper appears to be very attractive for the evaluation of biogas releases on a long term basis, by simulating the effects of meteorological parameters over the flux measurement, thus enhancing the extraction of the useful information in terms of a gas “flux” quantity. Modeling the Network of Municipal Solid Waste Separation Factors using Fuzzy Cognitive Mapping: A Case Study in Tehran

Municipal solid waste management is a major challenge, especially in metropolises. This research focuses on a non-technical issue in municipal solid waste management named municipal solid waste separation at the source and seeks to find the best policy in terms of model results. Source separation for recycling has been recognized as a way to achieve sustainable municipal solid waste (MSW) manag...

Appropriate Use of MSW Leachate Recycling in Municipal Solid Waste Landfilling1

There is considerable interest today in the so-called “biocell” approach toward municipal solid waste (MSW) landfilling in which leachate is introduced back into the landfill. This approach reduces the cost of leachate management and is said to reduce/eliminate the potential for long term landfill gas production and groundwater pollution. However, a critical review of the typical approach being...

Slope Stability of Municipal Solid Waste Landfills under Seismic Loading

Design of municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills requires a considerable attention due to the undesirable environmental and socio-economical impact of a potential failure. Furthermore, recent research and engineering practice experience in developed countries characterized by high seismicity, like U.S.A and Japan, has shown that MSW landfills are vulnerable to the seismic threat. Despite the viv...

Doctoral Thesis Predictions of leaching from municipal solid waste (MSW) and measures to improve leachate management at landfills

Landfill leachate from municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills is a long-term emission problem, which may last for several hundreds of years. The waste management resulting in this type of problem cannot be considered sustainable. This doctoral thesis focuses on the possibilities for changing leachate management strategies in order to enable a greater degree of sustainability. The first part of t...

Life-Cycle Assessment of Waste Management Greenhouse Gas Emissions Using Municipal Waste Combustor Data

This paper compares life-cycle greenhouse gas GHG emissions from two municipal solid waste MSW management options, municipal waste combustion, and landfilling, using a U.S. EPA life-cycle assessment LCA model, the MSW Decision Support Tool. Unlike previously reported LCAs, key combustion model inputs—total MSW carbon content and its biogenic/fossil split—are determined not from MSW composition ...
